The Decline of Love and Long-Term Relationships

Have you ever wondered why fewer and fewer people are falling in love and sustaining long-term relationships? Marriage statistics are worse than they’ve ever been.

A staggering 56% of marriages end in divorce. And of that 56%, around 20% of couples can’t leave due to financial constraints, children, or other commitments.

That leaves us with a very small percentage of people who are hopefully in warm, nourishing, and committed relationships. So why is love slipping through our fingers? The answer lies in dopamine.

The Impact of Instant Gratification

When I first heard this, I was shocked. Our brains were wired for a world of scarcity. Back in the day, everything took time—finding food, developing relationships, traveling from one place to another, and even cooking a meal.

Now? With the tap of a button, you can order a date, a meal, a car, or a t-shirt from Italy. Everything is instant.

Our brains aren’t designed for this level of abundance. They don’t know how to handle it. We’ve exhausted ourselves, overstimulated our dopamine systems, and fatigued our ability to fall in love and sustain it.

We are in a constant state of seeking more—more pleasure, more excitement, more stimulation. But our brains are constantly striving for balance.

The more we push for dopamine highs, the more our brains counteract with lows, leading to exhaustion, dissatisfaction, and even depression.

The Solution: Dopamine Fasting

The solution? Dopamine fasting which gives our brains a break from the relentless pursuit of pleasure. Meditation is one way to do this.

Exercise is another—when we put our bodies through discomfort, our brains balance the pain with an endorphin rush, ultimately replenishing our energy.

By reducing our dependency on external stimulation and slowing down, we regain the capacity to love deeply and meaningfully.

Adapting to a World of Hyper-Abundance

We live in a world of hyper-abundance, and our brains simply haven’t evolved to keep up. That’s why elevating our consciousness, increasing self-awareness, and rewiring our mental hardware is crucial.

The challenge will only grow as AI evolves into reasoning agents and takes on more of our tasks. If we want to love more, feel more, and enjoy life deeply, we must learn to relax, do less, and be content with less.

Only then will we have the energy for what truly matters—love, relationships, and a sustained, fulfilling future.
